From Military to the City
The origin of the Hummer H2 comes from the H1’s use as a military vehicle. Known as the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle or HMMWV, it was produced by AM General as a replacement for military jeeps and small trucks, due to the lack of competency that these vehicles were showing. The first prototype vehicle was produced in 1980. Because of the difficult to pronounce name, soldiers began calling it the “Humvee“. AM General soon produced very similar vehicles for civilians called Hummers. When AM General sold the Hummer name to General Motors in 1999, they still produced the vehicle, but GM was then responsible for selling the vehicle.
The first Hummer was produced for the civilian market in 1991 and was an immediate hit.
The H2, produced in 2003, is a smaller and more contemporary version of the Hummer H1. With room for 5 and plenty of cargo room, it has proved to be very capable.
The SUT Model
The Hummer Sport Utility Truck is a variation of the H2. Very similar to the SUV, the SUT features a bed that can be converted from a 5 passenger SUT with a small bed, to a 2 seat pickup with a 6 foot bed. Powered by a flex-fuel Vortec V8 making 393 horsepower, the vehicle has enough power to get the job done. The SUT also has a transfer case for four wheel drive, and an armored underside to protect it while offroading.
Starting in 2009, the SUT Model Hummer offers Bluetooth wireless connectivity and can run on Flex-Fuel.
